EIFS performance depends on much more than the visible finish coat. Substrate preparation, air and moisture barrier details, insulation, reinforcing mesh, base coat, openings, flashing and terminations all need to follow the selected system and project requirements.
EIFS Installation and Wall Preparation
Before EIFS installation begins, the wall substrate and interfaces should be reviewed so penetrations, windows, doors and transitions can be properly detailed. The approved insulation and attachment method are then coordinated with the wall assembly.
After the insulation is installed and prepared, reinforcing mesh is embedded in the base-coat system before the primer and finish coat are applied. Additional reinforcement may be specified in impact-prone locations depending on the project requirements.
Window, Door and Flashing Details
Openings are important locations in any exterior wall. EIFS around windows and doors must coordinate with flashings, membranes, sealants and drainage details so water is directed to the exterior rather than trapped behind the cladding.
Roof-to-wall intersections, deck connections, penetrations and changes to adjacent cladding also require careful detailing. These transition areas should be planned before finish work is completed.

Edmonton homes experience substantial seasonal temperature changes, freezing conditions and moisture exposure. EIFS assemblies should therefore be installed as complete systems with compatible materials and appropriate drainage and termination details.
